High above the «3 Vallées» ski area, an eagle spreads its wings in the updrafts and soars over the roof of Europe, at an altitude where an icy silence reigns. It soars over the majestic peaks of the Alps, then descends towards a mountain village, Méribel, a former refuge for shepherds which, despite its reputation as a winter sports resort, has carefully preserved its pastoral charm. The bird flies over the narrow streets where the houses cluster together, then soars back up into the sky. Its silhouette slowly fades into the vastness of the blue sky.

Near the hamlet of Raffort, a track of the same name leads to a traditional chalet, on a hillside where expanses of snow surround the evergreen forests, and where, in every direction, the rugged terrain casts irregular shapes against the sky. To the south, the Pic du Saulire and Mont Vallon overlook the Méribel valley, a breathtaking panorama that can be admired from the large adjoining terrace. Behind the wooden walls and old stonework, a fireplace gives off a gentle warmth and a scent of resin which, in the living room, mingles with the smell of pine emanating from the wooden floor, the ceiling and the authentic furniture. A timeless atmosphere envelops visitors, and no one would suspect that nearby, a hot tub, a sauna and a home cinema provide all the modern comforts of the chalet. The quality of the bedding is every bit as luxurious as the surroundings, and you can admire the sunrise over the surrounding valleys from the bedroom’s floor-to-ceiling windows, whilst the first rays of light brush the treetops and transform the snow that has accumulated overnight into fine droplets. In a few hours, the ski resorts will open their doors, but there is still time to savour the moment and admire the spectacle of nature slowly awakening, in this place where, as Nicolas Houde put it, «dawn is like an infinitely tender gaze».
